500 words challenge
Many years ago I heard someone interviewed on the radio, an author most likely, but I can't be sure. They were saying how they gave themselves a challenge; to write one 500 word story every week for a year. Not 490 words, or 499 words, or 501 words, but exactly 500 words. At the time I fancied having a go, but never did, and then as time went on, I forgot all about it, until out of the blue, that interview came back to me during the week, and I figured that there's no time like the present.
My rules are simple - I have to write my story in one sitting and it has to be 500 words. Sometimes, I might go into it with an idea of where I want it to go, and other times, I might just start and see what happens (like this first effort, where I write the first sentence with no idea what the next line would be, let alone the ending).
I'll see how many I can do (hopefully 52, but we'll see...) and I'll post them every Sunday - no fixed time, just at some point. Please let me know what you think of them by commenting below the story. The first one is up now on the new blog section called 500 words.
